GRAND PALACE TOUR – ON PRIVATE BASIS –

TOUR DESCRIPTION. Grand Palace Tour is a great induction for diving into the authentic culture of Thai history and the heart of Thai people. During this tour you will be escorted by enthusiastic tour guides through and around the key attractions of the Grand Palace. The tour will begin with you visiting the Grand Palace, which is easily the most famous and momentous landmark in the country, and has served as the official residence of the King of Thailand since the 18th century (The present King Bhumibol (Rama IX) lives in Chitralada Palace, closed to tourists, though). The Grand Palace is a complex of buildings that covers 218,400 square meters and is surrounded by four walls, which are 1,900 meters in length and were built in 1782. The true wonders of the Grand Palace lie in its incredible and extremely creative architecture that will leave you in awe. Then you will lead to the Wat Phra Kaew temple, also known as the temple of the emerald Buddha, which is the most worshipped temple in Thailand. Enshrined in this temple is the majestic emerald Buddha that sits in the meditating position, standing 45 cm tall, it is carved from a single block of jade. It is also covered by a cloak of pure gold that gets changed three times a year, corresponding to the summer, winter and rainy seasons. The other attractions of the Grand Palace that you will see on the tour are the Coronation Throne Hall, the Royal Reception Hall, the Royal Funeral Hall, the Golden Chedit, and the Royal Pantheon.

TOUR BACKGROUND: MORE ABOUT THE GRAND PALACE. The Grand Palace is a complex of buildings in Bangkok, the Capital City of Thailand. It has served as the official residence of the Kings of Thailand for the last 2 centuries. The King Rama I began its building in 1782, during his kingdom. In that period the King of Thailand moved the capital across the river from Thonburi to Bangkok. The Palace has been constantly expanded and many additional structures were added over time.

GRAND PALACE HISTORY. The Bangkok Royal Palace complex is laid very similar to the palaces of Ayutthaya, the ancient and glorious former Capital of Siam (the ancient name of Thailand) which was raided by the Burmese. The Outer Court, near the entrance, used to house government departments in which the King was directly involved, such as civil administration, the army and the treasury. The Central Court is where the residence of the King and the halls used for conducting state business were located. Today, two of the throne halls are open to the public, and it is possible to marvel at the exquisite detail on the facades of these impressive structures.

The Inner Court is where the King’s royal consorts and daughters lived in the past. The Inner Court was like a small town only populated by women and boys under the age of puberty. Today, even though no royalty currently reside in the inner court, it is s until completely closed off to the public. Despite the proximity of the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, there is a distinct contrast in style between the very Thai Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the European inspired design of the Grand Palace (the roof being the main exception). Other highlights are the Boromabiman Hall, the Amarinda Hall, the original residence of King Rama I and the Hall of Justice. The present King of Thailand, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, however, resides at the Chitralada Palace.
